[pharmnews] SML Meditree Launches Specialized Clinical Trial Analysis Services for Alzheimer’s Disease Therapeutics

SML Meditree, an affiliate of Samkwang Medical Laboratories, announced that it has officially launched clinical trial analysis services for Alzheimer’s disease therapeutics and is strengthening its expertise in the field.
At the center of this development is the expertise of Dr. Seung-woo Kang, who recently joined the company. Dr. Kang, who joined SML Meditree in December last year, previously worked at Seoul Clinical Laboratories and ISS (International Scientific Standards), and served as Head of Research at AriBio, a biotechnology company specializing in the development of dementia therapeutics. He currently serves as Chairman of the Korean Society for Pharmaceutical Analysis.
With Dr. Kang joining the company, SML Meditree has strengthened its expertise and experience in clinical trials for dementia therapeutics. In particular, drawing on his extensive experience in Alzheimer’s disease therapeutic development, Dr. Kang also provides consulting services to pharmaceutical companies and biotechnology ventures on various aspects of new drug development. This enables SML Meditree to provide comprehensive services spanning the early stages of new drug development through clinical trial sample analysis.
SML Meditree has established APOE genotyping for Alzheimer’s disease within its analysis center and is currently developing mass spectrometry-based analysis of Aβ42/40 (amyloid beta), a promising biomarker for dementia therapeutic development. The company aims to establish an analytical system for Alzheimer’s disease-related biomarkers using LC-MS/MS, SIMOA, and LUMIPULSE platforms in the second half of this year.
APOE genotyping identifies the E2, E3, and E4 isoforms, which represent genetic variants of apolipoprotein E. The test plays an important role in Alzheimer’s disease research, particularly because the E4 isoform is known to be a risk factor for Alzheimer’s disease. APOE genotyping can provide important information for assessing the likelihood of developing dementia, patient screening, and evaluating treatment response.
