U2Biome, a gut health and microbiome-based healthcare brand, announced that its research center analyzed gut microbiome data from Korean individuals using next-generation sequencing (NGS) technology and found changes in certain bacterial strains associated with obesity-related health indicators following the intake of personalized probiotics.
The U2Biome Research Center conducts comprehensive gut microbiome analyses based on stool samples collected by individuals. The analysis evaluates the diversity and balance of the gut microbiome and provides information on 19 probiotic strains associated with gut health. U2Biome also offers a personalized service that scores six key health indicators by comparing individual results with average data from the Korean population.
The analysis was conducted on 194 adults whose obesity-related health indicator scores were found to be low based on their gut microbiome test results, indicating a need for improved health management. The research center instructed participants to take probiotics tailored to their individual gut microbiome environments and subsequently conducted follow-up testing to track changes in their gut bacterial strains.
The U2Biome Research Center focused on Prevotella copri (P. copri), a bacterial strain that has been reported in some studies to be associated with body fat and metabolic health. Among 73 eligible participants who were found to have P. copri in their gut microbiome, the level of P. copri increased by approximately 2.5-fold following the intake of personalized probiotics, rising from an average of 1.97 to 4.88.
Sinae Park, Director of the U2Biome Research Center, said, “Even when managing diet and exercising for weight management, it can be helpful to consider an individual’s gut microbiome environment as well. Because the composition of the gut microbiome differs from person to person, it is important to identify which strains may be lacking and determine an appropriate direction for personal health management.”
She added, “These analyses can serve as a reference for determining an individualized approach to health management. We will continue to improve our reporting system so that individuals can intuitively understand the complex ecosystem of their gut microbiome and identify management approaches suited to their individual needs.”
U2Biome has accumulated more than 8,000 gut microbiome test results from Korean individuals to date. The company plans to further strengthen its personalized healthcare services based on gut microbiome testing, leveraging accumulated test data that reflects the dietary habits and lifestyles of the Korean population.
